A Line of Type / 120 Jahre Typografische Geschichte

Zum Ende des Jahres 2006 erreichte mich ein Buch, das ich zum – noch – beginnenden neuen Jahr, hier auf Slanted nicht unerwähnt lassen möchte. Es ist Ottmar Mergenthalers Erfindung der Linotype Druckmaschine gewidmet.
„A Line of Type“, von Alessio Leonardi und Jan Middendorp, erzählt auf humorige Weise 120 Jahre Typografische Geschichte. Das Buch ist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes „Infotainment“, denn Leonardis naiv-geradliniger Humor und sein unverwechselbarer Zeichenstil, bilden hier wieder eine vollkommene Einheit! Und das macht um so mehr spaß, wenn man realisiert, das auf diesem Weg profunde Typo-Geschichte vermittelt wird, die – ganz wie im richtigen Leben – von wahnsinnig vielen Faktoren beeinflusst, doch irgendwie sinnvoll verläuft. :)

One summer's day in 1886, the publisher of the New York Herald suddenly exclaimed: "Ottmar, you have cast a Line of Type!" The "line" in question was a hot metal slug that had just been produced by a brand new machine called The Blower. This hissing apparatus, which scooped its type from a boiling pot of lead, was the latest in an endless series of attempts to set type mechanically - and the first one that worked.
After that memorable afternoon in 1886, the machine would be called "Linotype." Its inventor, a German emigré named Ottmar Mergenthaler, has been recognized as one of the genius inventors of the 19th century.
