The renowned German photographer and Lead-Award winner Horst A. Friedrichs devotes his attention in this illustrated book to the statement of a subculture: the Rockers leather jackets and coats. The extensive photobook PRIDE & GLORY: THE ART OF THE ROCKERS’ JACKET is an authentic homage to this scene and is now published by DAAB Verlag.

The biker leather jacket developed in the 1950s from a practical garment to a symbol of the youth revolt. James Dean wore them, Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper. Since then lives the myth. To date, these leather jackets are among the few outfits with cult status. You have soul. They show character. They tell stories and have made history. For their owners, they are a part of themselves. They are proudly worn, painted, decorated, embroidered, decorated with studs and patches.

The traditional British leather jacket manufacturer Lewis Leathers archived for decades in his Lewis Leathers “Vintage Jacket” collection particularly beautiful and unusual specimens. The artistic photographs by Horst A. Friedrichs make them accessible to the general public for the first time. Insight into this very special world is provided by the introductory essay by Colin Fallows, professor of sound and visual arts at John Moores University in Liverpool, as well as a lengthy talk with Derek Harris, owner of Lewis Leathers, London.

The photographer Horst A. Friedrichs, who was born in Frankfurt am Main, repeatedly attracts attention with illustrated books that focus on fashion and lifestyle beyond the mainstream. Horst A. Friedrich worked as a freelance photojournalist for Stern, Geo, New York Times and The Independent. Since 1997 he lives in London.
