Julia Kahl was born in 1983 in the small town of Aschaffenburg, Germany. She grew up in a rural environment, surrounded by woods, yet not too far from larger cities like Frankfurt. Her interest for art and design sparked at an early age, first, possibly through her grandfather's craftsmanship, and then by nearby art museums. She went on to study Visual Communications at the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt where she focused on photography and typography. The more she engaged with her studies, she found it more interesting to combine the two disciplines. In 2008, she graduated with a diploma and a 400-page handcrafted book about the gold rush in the early days and today (“Goldrausch – Liebe, Hoffnung, Macht & Tod”).
In 2007, she interned in Karlsruhe with MAGMA Brand Design where she was exposed to writing and editorial work that gave her more satisfaction beyond being a graphic designer. In 2008, she moved to Karlsruhe and started working for Slanted full time to establish it as a professional magazine and blog with a worldwide distribution and awareness. As the managing editor and graphic designer of Slanted, she built up a broad network of designers from all over the world. These connections were the foundation for all other publications that were edited and conceptualized by Slanted, in which she also participated as editor or designer. She’s presenting Slanted as a regular speaker on international design conferences.
Since July 2014, she is founding partner of SLANTED PUBLISHERS, which is now operated by Julia Kahl and Lars Harmsen, with a view to share the affection for typography and design.
