Dafi Kühne: Constructing Posters

Exhibition at Ginza Graphic Gallery [ggg], Tokyo, Japan

Author: Dafi Kühne

From July 14 to August 26, 2026, the Ginza Graphic Gallery (ggg) in Tokyo presents Constructing Posters, a solo exhibition by Swiss graphic designer and letterpress printer Dafi Kühne.

The exhibition focuses on Kühne's distinctive approach to poster design, in which the design of a poster and its production are inseparable. Working with a collection of historic letterpress presses, metal and wood type, hand-cut linoleum, and many different kinds of experimental printing blocks, he develops a unique production process for every project. Historic equipment is continually adapted, modified, and combined with contemporary tools to meet the specific demands of each design.

Alongside around 120 posters, Constructing Posters presents printing formes, tools, sketches, and production material, offering insight into the often invisible process behind the finished work. Rather than presenting letterpress as a nostalgic craft, the exhibition examines it as an evolving design practice and a field for technical experimentation. At its core is the question that drives Kühne's work: how can the printing forme for a particular poster be constructed?
The exhibition is accompanied by ggg Books 145: Dafi Kühne, published by the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion.
