Weltformat Graphic Design Festival

The Weltformat Graphic Design Festival in Lucerne once again includes six exhibitions this year, a symposium with international graphic artists, a competition for newcomers, and the well-known graphic bazaar. It’s already the 15th time the festival is taking place. Under the motto “Life’s a Pitch,” the organizers want to bring the competitive aspects of the graphic design industry to a wider audience, while also showcasing the seemingly endless variety of designs and possibilities in modern times. At the same time, the nine-day event reflects the exciting range of current trends in both digital and analog design.

Life’s a Pitch – The Festival Theme 2023
Participating in pitches is something that almost all graphic designers have to deal with sooner or later. Especially for young designers, it offers the opportunity to showcase their skills and secure interesting projects. Unfortunately, participating in pitches often has its downsides: limited interaction with clients, lack of transparency, and unpaid work are just some of the issues that concern us this year.

Background on this year’s festival poster
The Weltformat Festival poster is designed by a different designer every year. Due to the festival theme “Life’s a Pitch,”the plan this year was to turn it into a pitch and invite six studios to participate. The designers were supposed to act as the jury and select the winning poster from their own submissions. However, it turned out differently than expected, as the designers joined forces to make a statement against unfair pitch culture. They unveiled their jointly designed poster with the following statement:

“We were asked to design a poster for the Weltformat Festival and pitch against each other. We said no and we said yes. And that’s why: We said no because we don’t want to participate in unpaid pitches and compete against each other. We said yes because we want to open up a discussion about how we can work together, rather than against each other. And because thinking and working together is great fun. Pitch is a bitch.” Anna Haas, Herendi Artemisio, Jiri Oplatek, Johnson / Kingston, Tania Prill, Niklaus Troxler

Main Exhibition “Kieler Woche Plakate”
Location: Kunsthalle, Bourbaki, Lucerne
The Kieler Woche is not only Europe’s largest sailing regatta but also a huge city festival that attracts people from all over Germany. Over the years, this annual event has evolved into a prestigious design competition: Since 1959, five selected designers or design studios have been invited each year to create the poster for the following event as part of a pitch. The poster’s theme remains unchanged over the years, and thus, the designs from the last sixty years provide a unique insight into the development of European graphic design. The list of winners and participants reads like a who’s who of graphic design, including prominent names like Anton Stankowski, Ruedi Baur, Wim Crouwel, Cyan, Alan Fletcher, Josef Müller-Brockmann, and Odermatt + Tissi. In our exhibition, we will not only present all the winning designs for the first time but also showcase a wide selection of designs from the participating teams.

Exhibition “Lost Pitches”
Location: Kunsthalle (Cabinet), Bourbaki, Lucerne
The Lost Pitches exhibition presents an alternative world of works that never made it to the public and invites you to take a look at design concepts from renowned studios. In the creative industry, lost pitches are an experience that almost all entrepreneurs, designers, or artists go through at some point. While winning a pitch undoubtedly provides a sense of appreciation and success, lost pitches should by no means be seen as failures. Insights are owed to the works that didn’t quite make it to the top of the ladder.

Exhibition “The Neubad Plakat”
Location: Elephanthouse, Neustadtstrasse, Lucerne
This year, the Lucerne cultural and studio house Neubad celebrates its tenth anniversary. Over the course of this decade, an impressive collection of black-and-white posters has accumulated, reflecting the diversity and distinctive character of Neubad as well as black-and-white poster art in many ways. Neubad is not only a cultural venue for the Lucerne metropolitan region but also enjoys a high level of recognition in the graphic design scene due to its distinctive corporate identity. The black-and-white artworks are known worldwide, and over the years, more than a hundred different designers have created almost 600 posters for Neubad, including some renowned award winners. This year, the collection was published in the book The Neubad Plakat.

Creature’s from Ukraine

Since 2019, I have found a hobby for myself – to photograph and then draw very strange wooden sculptures that I sometimes find in the yards of residential areas of cities. People try to somehow decorate their yard and sometimes create something very strange from tree stumps. In fact, such sculptures are not often found, so I have amassed a small collection over the years. Why am I doing this? I believe that naive folk art is a very interesting space for artistic research.

A series of artworks “Bestiary”

A series of works entitled “Bestiary” realizes the desire to explore the mystery of natural wonders. To explore different aspects of the psychological state, where emotions are transformed into a plot and reflected in the form of mythical creatures. The images are created to expand the space for fantasy and allow us to comprehend the possibilities of imagination. Each creature is endowed with supernatural abilities and internal contradictions, has its own unique history and character traits.

The Myths of Ukrainian Nature

The Myths of Ukrainian Nature — a series of mask designs inspired by Ukrainian myths. Each mask hints at a Ukrainian mythological creature, and each of the designs is made entirely from plants: pomegranate, grapes, mistletoe, eucalyptus, gerbera, brunia, and more. The project’s goal is to pique interest in our Ukrainian culture, to showcase its mystery and richness. Ukrainian culture is an enigma, filled with secrets, something that can’t be proven but can be felt.

UA TRIDENT

Researching forms and contemporary stylistic solutions of the Ukrainian trident reflect Ukraine today as a modern, digital state. The trident, in this case, is an object of interpretation, a symbol of a young, diverse country striving for development and freedom.

Illustrations for Calendar 2023

Every page has its small reflection on the things we tend to overlook during the war. In fact, it is truly difficult to see and enjoy daily things through the lens of war, while there are constant blackouts, bombings, and sirens.

That is why I wanted to create reminders for every month and rediscover some things not only for myself but for my friends too. Such things as looking up to the sky, gifting flowers, and being tender are small yet almost unreachable.

Merry Christmas and Happy New year… in Ukraine

Reflection on events happening around us. The “celebration” of familiar holidays has changed its appearance and significance in the context of a harsh war in which the country and its entire population find themselves 24/7. There is a total reassessment of values, and a change of symbols, such as the New Year tree being replaced by a more relevant and practical attribute in the context of war – an anti-tank hedgehog, and a champagne bottle being replaced by a military projectile.

069. UKRAINE

I guess I hadn’t done any type with such love, enthusiasm, and accuracy as this UKRAINE lettering! Tried to relay it through my beliefs about all Ukrainian. Blooming, playful, worthy and glorious. Referring to Ukrainian art nouveau architecture which adorns our history and our cities and which is under attack today. I believe the Ukrainian society will become even stronger and more independent, emphasizing its authenticity and originality, we will rebuild what is physically destroyed.

Illustrated fairy tales: Big little heroes.

On Ukraine’s official Instagram, we’ve conjured documentary fairy tales, inspired by real-life foreign volunteers aiding during the war in Ukraine. It’s a unique blend of storytelling and illustrations, spotlighting the enduring spirit of resilience. As Ilia Anufrienko, the founder of the agency, says: “We wanted to tell about small and large deeds of real, not fictional, heroes. It’s a way to say ‘thank you’ – through stories about them.”

Ink Sketches and Expressions on Womanhood

Some time ago it was impossible to draw anything, but war. It’s hard to describe that feeling of constant pain and anger, while seeing all the videos with destroyed buildings, knowing that people you love are in danger. It makes you feel numb. It led to the point, where you could not draw anything. So here are late office sketches, made some Friday for reconnecting with an inner self and putting all the love to women and sisterhood in something visible.

Crime Without Punishment

In partnership with the Ukrainian Leadership Academy and Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we crafted “Crime Without Punishment”, a 50-kilogram, 6,000-page book about Russia’s chilling crimes. Presented to global entities like NATO and the European Parliament, it highlights illicit deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children.
