play with type

The work is based on the outcome of the 36daysoftype challenge on instagram. The difference from other type projects is that only one letter was designed per day instead of designing a group of letters from the beginning. I started early to make variants of each letter though, which makes the typeface more versatile and flexible to use. I experimented with simple and geometric shapes and reused those shapes for the following letter whenever possible. The typeface grew slowly and became playful, funny and funky. Since I love playing with colors as well, color became another important element in the series for 36daysoftype.

Bloom

Bloom – Symbolises the rejuvenation and growth of our togetherness as a nation in these unprecedented times. It is also a thank you to all the NHS staff and key workers who have unselfishly put others first.

Bloom was an animated artwork as part of a photo project celebrating ‘stories of hope’ from the NHS that screened at London’s Piccadilly Circus.

The project was curated by ‘The People’s Picture’ showcased more than 12,000 photos and stories of key workers, carers, patients and NHS staff.

Neon Sun Beam

Color and type is a powerful combination. At the same time, the elementary and serving character of typography usually requires a limitation to a single color. That is why the design of polychrome (multi color) fonts is still a niche. The polychrome font TR Grind contains 12 layers that can be colored and combined in any way. The character is inspired by wood type styles, geometric patterns and modernist shapes. Depending on the configuration of the layers, the font conveys a variety of tones. TR Grind is currently designed as an uppercase font which includes a Latin Extended character set.

Cubio™ Mono Type Specimen

Here’s a type specimen poster for the Cubio™ Mono font family from R9 Type+Design. With the hexagonal silhouette as our inspiration, we applied this angular form through all aspects. This includes the overall look of the letters, patterns and icons to the terminal of each letter stem.

SculptPuzzle

The SculptPuzzle is part of a process (see also Colour Animé poster) where I had a wish to create patterns to interact and build with. I experimented with one shape (based on a square divide in four) to make flat colour patterns and three-dimensional puzzle sculptures with.

I explored how flat shapes could translate into three-dimensional shapes. I explore how colours change depending on relation to one another and depending on the light that hit it.

Blow the cartridge

This illustration was inspired by nostalgia for old video games. As a kid, when I had my Super Nintendo console, sometimes the cartridge wouldn’t work, and you had to take it out, blow in it and try again. Usually that would resolve the issue. It’s a reminder of simple, carefree times, when all the problems were so miniscule, even though they seemed like a big deal.

Magnet

Magnet is Frere-Jones Type’s first font release from an external designer. Inga Plönnig is an independent type designer based in Berlin, and probably one of the most promising new designers to enter the type design field in recent years. Thats why the team at Frere-Jones Type is very excited to have Magnet as their first externally-designed font release.

Apart from being struck by Magnet’s beautiful rhythm and shape, Frere-Jones Type could see that Inga’s mix of intuition and analysis made a natural fit with their retail library, and they hope to showcase more work of emerging designers going forward.

Magnet is an energetic and intriguing sans-serif family. Its family structure is unconventional, offering an extra compressed Headline and a workhorse Standard under the same name—effectively two families combined.

Magnet Headline creates a dazzling pattern of tightly packed shapes, which is amplified further in the Slanted and Backslanted styles. Magnet Standard is the quieter sibling, which carries its own flair with deeply cut notches and unusual turns of weight. Its boxy curves take well to dense setting and tight line spacing. Through years of experimenting with rigid patterns and organic details, Inga has created a family that is both surprising and reliable.

Ava’s quest

My photos tell stories. In the present case it is Ava White and her adventures. She follows an inner call and sets out on a journey into her own lower regions. A battle rages within Ava, between good and evil. First, she must face the demons of herself in order to recreate. She steps out of her familiar surroundings, sets into a new world, and finally saves herself. My photos are about longings and fantasies that want to be lived. Without kitsch, people would be sad.

R.E.S – Music Festival

RES stands for “entropy sound response”, an alternative solution to music festivals in uncertain times.
A project driven by promoters, cultural activists and music lovers. A reshaped music experience for limited crowds was located at the enormous Fira Sabadell, using just 5% of its capacity to offer a secure live music experience for pandemic times.
