see the line part 2: I live by the sea

The illustration is based on personal experience living next to the sea and not being able to go to the sea for different reasons such as a strict lockdown in Portugal or barriers I created in my head.
Walls, barriers, obstacles and fences are elements that have appeared recently in my work connected with personal and political barriers.

Pinks

When I think pink, I think of soft dreamy clouds, the euphoria of love, raw flesh, cotton candy and chewing gum from my childhood, all mixed together in a sweet sparkling haze. Pink is both innocent and sensual, light as air yet juicy, and always carries the playfulness of a child’s mind.

Freiluftkino Frankfurt

Freiluftkino Frankfurt has been taking place every summer at different locations since 2014. The corporate design refers to ancient cinema neon signs and changed its key visual every year, matching the different locations. Film stills are an important part of the design, which announce the new season as teasers. The color scheme for the 2017 season conveys summery lightness and anticipation of cinema under the open sky.

The Spontaneous Order

Playing with vertical and horizontal scales, the work applies the RGB stripes to communicate the phrase “the spontaneous order”. The glitch result forms a visual maze/landscape which invites readers to “walk” into the details and decode the message.

Exit Honolulu

“In my photography I put a special emphasis on the examination of the relationship between humans and nature in different cultures of our world. I find my subjects mainly in large cities and on islands: both are places where civilisation and nature encounter each other in an area of limited space. I visited Honolulu on the Hawaiian island of Oahu last February to photograph nature in this city. We were able to leave Hawaii shortly before the lockdown and the contrasting colours of our hotel floor and the exit sign represent the mixed feelings we had due to the new pandemic situation.”

READ THIS

READ THIS is a text composition by Rüdiger Schlömer, and the outcome of a series of creative dialogues in typography, colourwork and knitting. For its making, the letter studies “XYZ” by Andreas Uebele were completed into an alphabet, then knitted by Loret Karman in her own hand-dyed yarn, then arranged into a seemingly random texture for letter or pattern recognition. The making of these letters tells about digital colour pixels meeting the analog mechanics of knitting, a pile of yarn leftovers, the secret ingredients for their dyeing, and some sheep chewing a lot of green while growing their wool. So when you READ THIS, think about the long way these colours have come to reach your eyes.

Color of Language

What is the color of language? What are the similarities in sounds/letters that these languages share? Using English, Japanese, and German as examples I pick 7 colors to explore within their language parameters. Upon observing, I noticed that all three languages often uses a word that describes an object (ie: orange, midori, rosa for roses) to make an immediate association between the word and the color. The first poster combines black type with colored spheres and words which makes finding those associations easier for those who don’t know German and Japanese, while the second contrasts black type with the colored background, which makes it a bit harder for non-speakers.

awareness brings

“Awareness brings” is a typographic synthesis based on the well-known Fibonacci sequence. “Awareness brings more awareness, and more awareness; guess what? Brings even more awareness! So it goes”.The spine is being used to illustrate the continuous flow of the phrasing. From scaling the small type to the bigger one and backwards. The grid on the background reminds me of the system I have put in my thoughts. It is the beginning of the artwork’s creation and constitutes the guidance to maintain the words in each shape that is included in Fibonacci’s Sequence. Moreover, the red color is the main signage that informs our attention. To warn us to explore the message.

Free to go Anywhere

Especially the last year, living in a pandemic, made me realize how much freedom the ability to drive a car can bring you. If it´s getting somewhere safely or just getting out of the city into nature, just to escape the noise for a while. Driving can make everyday life a bit easier and is also sign of independence. And who doesn’t love listening to music with friends while driving just anywhere?

true colours

Accepting yourself for who you are can take a lot of courage and bravery. Loving yourself takes time. What world would we live in, if everyone would stop hating on others and start embracing their own self? If we could love and treat our bodies as holy and not just see their faults and flaws. Who said they were flaws in the first place? “So don’t be afraid to let them show. Your true colors.”
