FONS HICKMANN

The Brandenburgisches Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst (Brandenburg Museum of Modern Art) presents a substantial solo exhibition of posters by Fons Hickmann at the Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus, bringing together work from more than three decades.

The exhibition spans early and recent posters, international commissions, cultural projects, political interventions and self-initiated work. Rather than presenting a strictly chronological retrospective, it traces the continuities, shifts and contradictions within a practice in which commissioned design and autonomous artistic work have increasingly come together.

Typography, image and language form the basis of Hickmann’s work, often engaging with cultural, political and social subjects. Many of the posters shown have received international recognition and have contributed to the discourse around contemporary visual communication.

Hickmann has lived and worked in Berlin for almost three decades. He is Professor of Graphic Design / Communication Design at Berlin University of the Arts, where he has taught since 2007, having previously been Professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, the Type Directors Club New York and ADC, and President of 100 Beste Plakate – Germany Austria Switzerland.

The exhibition is accompanied by FONS HICKMANN Posters—Now and Then, published by Slanted Publishers. The book is the first extensive survey of Hickmann’s poster work across more than thirty years.

At the opening on 2 October, BLMK director Ulrike Kremeier, curator Helene Roolf and philosopher Jürgen W. Schulz will speak. Music comes from Stefan Schneider, known for Kreidler, To Rococo Rot and his solo project Mapstation.
