Sastre, a hybrid typeface inspired by nature and craftsmanship

The latest addition to NM type font library brings a refreshing contribution to the typographic landscape. Originally started as a student project at Reading University in 2014, Sastre is now making its first public debut. Created by Galician designer María Ramos, the text typeface is currently available in the upright version. Sastre includes five weights and a variable font. Future releases will include italic styles and display cuts.

The mix of influences in the design enhances a unique personality. Unexpected connections emerge from María’s family memories and the tailor workshop their parents have run for over 40 years. She is not the first to link clothing and bespoke garments with type design. Beatrice Warde described fonts like “the clothes that words wear”, while Adrian Frutiger noted, “the work of a type designer is just like that of a dressmaker: clothing the naked, constant human form”.
Ramos took her exploration further by not only recognising Sastre’s broken structure in the drawings made by her father on fabric, but also finding inspiration from natural patterns, like the surface texture of a tree leaf and the intricate work of skilled weavers: spider webs.

The set features special characters, a delight for designers and creatives. There is a collection of stitches that perform as geometric shapes to create patterns and borders. The small caps, built as a monospaced set, add another voice to the type family.

The release comes with a special site where one can explore the project storyline, test the typeface while reading about M. Ramos Tailor Shop, or learn about the design features. Sastre is exclusively available from NM type, which offers a 20% discount on licences acquired before the end of June.
