Author: Josephine Schroeder

Embracing Amsterdam’s Creative Pulse! Slanted’s 41st issue embarks on an awe-inspiring journey through the design haven of the Netherlands’ charming capital. We had the incredible pleasure of visiting the brilliant minds of Karel and Diederik Martens from martens and martens, immersing ourselves in their studio and delving into captivating conversations on all things design-related.

Karel Martens (1939) is a graphic designer specializing in typography. His work consists mainly of the design of numerous books and covers. He also designed stamps, coins, building lettering, telephone cards, and monoprints. He taught at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, at Yale University in New Haven, and founded Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem. In 2019, he and his children founded martens and martens.

Their work can be found in the Slanted Magazine #41—Amsterdam. Additionally we shot a video interview with Karel and Diederik, talking about their point of view on design and opinion about the future. Take a look at the Amsterdam issue and the video platform for diverse opinions, impressions, inspiration, and motivation.
