Damaskuserlebnis

Damaskuserlebnis is the title of the book created by Luise Klett as the centerpiece of her bachelor’s thesis at Bauhaus University Weimar. The Book comprises a diverse range of contributions related to the country of Syria. With input from fifteen distinct contributors, the publication provides readers with personal insights spanning Syria’s landscape from 1953 to 2022.

Amidst a media environment frequently characterized by coverage of strife and hardship within Syria, this initiative presents an alternative viewpoint. By means of the contributors’ narratives, readers are acquainted with a Syria characterized by other means. Drawing from the narratives of her grandparents and other key contributors to this compendium, Luise possesses an awareness that Syria’s historical and contemporary tapestry extends far beyond conventional perceptions here in Europe. In order to impart this perspective to a wider audience, she has undertaken the creation of this book. This work has several purposes: to highlight the constructive aspects of the Middle East while examining the intricate elements that contribute to the nation’s current situation. It is dedicated to better understanding different cultural contexts and highlights the importance of integration and unbiased communication within our social framework. This anthology of narratives serves as a poignant reminder of the power inherent in storytelling to bridge divides. Beneath the surface, it encourages to go beyond the familiar and to stand up for collective principles. In the past, as today, people all over the world leave their homes behind in search of a new future. The numbers of people fleeing are constantly increasing.

Collaboration forms the foundation of this project, illustrated by the partnership with LUCIA Verlag Weimar and the Wortschatz—Netzwerk Welcome Weimar association. The book’s pricing approach is carefully crafted: 15 euros to manage production expenses, alongside a 7-euro donation designated to bolster the Wortschatz Netzwerk. The remaining funds, allotted to LUCIA Verlag Weimar, energize educational endeavors and incubate fresh initiatives.

The Final form

The final form printed edition is now out. This is a special edition of form magazine (issues 300+301). It’s both a celebration of its journey and a poignant farewell, marking the end of an era.

Inside, the pages unfold with discussions about beauty, AI’s sense of aesthetics, graphic design intricacies, and even the cultural history of mirrors. A discourse on Camp David’s brand and hasty aesthetic judgments adds depth to the content.

It’s hard to believe that after 66 years, this journey concludes. Back in the day, the founders could never have imagined the legacy they were setting in motion. The news of form magazine’s final chapter is tinged with sadness. From 1957 to 2023, it has graced our lives, and now it bids farewell due to an array of challenges, including the dynamic shifts in media consumption patterns. It’s essential to note that the magazine’s closure doesn’t stem from its fundamental ideological values. Rather, it’s the culmination of various factors, such as the surge in paper costs and the changing reading preferences, that have prompted their decision.

The editorial of the last issue underscores a regrettable reality—it serves as a mirror to our capitalist society where securing funds for inventive, culturally significant, and imaginative ventures like form is a huge challenge. This sobering reality inadvertently accentuates the relatively diminished regard for design in Germany when compared to other industries. This disparity becomes strikingly evident when we examine the financial allocations that have been channeled into political ventures in recent years, often yielding results that fall short of expectations.

Form, established in 1957 by Jupp Ernst, Willem Sandberg, Curt Schweicher, and Wilhelm Wagenfeld, has undergone a series of transformations and currently boasts a robust brand presence. In 2012, Peter Wesner assumed ownership of both the magazine and the form publishing house, fostering their growth in Frankfurt alongside his wife, Barbara Glasner. Their focus revolves around enriching the realms of design, architecture, and corporate publishing through innovative book releases.

Throughout its journey, chief editors have played an instrumental role in shaping Form’s essence. This influence traces back to Karl-Heinz Krug, who dedicated 36 years to the magazine’s evolution from 1962 to 1998. The legacy continued with Petra Schmidt (1999–2005), Gerrit Terstiege (2006–2012), Sophie Lovell (Executive Editor, 2012–2013), Stephan Ott (2012–2019), and, since 2020, Nina Sieverding and Anton Rahlwes as co-chief editors.

Don’t miss the chance to get your hands on the last form magazine edition. We extend heartfelt gratitude for the thought-provoking articles that have been a part of our lives. To our colleagues, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Alle Tage

Design changes the world. The book Alle Tage showcases works of visual communication (posters, exhibitions, magazines, books, as well as work materials and concepts), primarily from the social and cultural domain. It aims to encourage utilizing everyday life as a resource and employing communication design for a better coexistence.

In addition to texts by Anna Berkenbusch and works from her studio in Berlin, as well as numerous student projects, it presents brief statements from young designers about their profession. One chapter is dedicated to the collaboration between Cuban designers and students, as well as a collection of printed materials from everyday visual communication over the last 100 years. With over 500 illustrations and extensive indexes at the end of each chapter, along with guest contributions from various authors, the book is comprehensive.

As small pauses or bookmarks, printed everyday finds are included in the book, such as text fragments, photographs of signs, or newspaper clippings from Anna Berkenbusch’s collection. The cover flaps are sealed with different stickers featuring quotes, greetings from the author, or handwritten notes–making each book unique. The hidden pages reveal what lies behind the works: designers in work situations, setting up exhibitions, and presentations.

Typeface of the Month: Spades

Spades is a contemporary Baroque typeface that blends historical influences of ornate 18th century typography with the modern device of an inktrap. Designed by Oakland-based type designer Sascha Hopson, the family was released through Order Type Foundry in July 2023.

The family explores the juxtaposition of two distinct historical periods: the Black Arts Movement and the Baroque Era. While seemingly contradictory, Spades finds an overlap and forges its voice as a typeface through the extravagance, expression, and attitude of the respective eras.

The origins of Spades began with Hopson reflecting on the work of and paying homage to revered artist David Hammons. A key piece of inspiration early on in the project was Hammons’ collection of body prints starting from the 1960s. The use of spades or shovels were frequent motifs throughout his early work, centered around confronting and reclaiming the deprecating racial slur “spade.” Beyond his direct confrontation of this language, Hammons used perversion in his art to ask provocative questions such as, what is Black art, what does it mean to make Black art, and can it be free to be anything?

The Spades family originated from sketch explorations. Foundationally, the base of Spades is an old-style design. When Hopson dove deeper into stylings of the 18th century, he discovered the scalloped-serif construction of Fleischmann’s work. Through early exploratory sketches, he attempted to combine the modern visual device of an inktrap with these historical foundations. This exercise in merging two opposing styles leaned into the thinking of uncovering expression and subversion in Black art. The amalgamation created tension that—through later refinement—found a visual relationship.

Spades is a meditation on subversion through these juxtapositions, and an homage to the expansiveness of blackness in the medium of a typeface.

Do the Stars Need a Reason to Shine?

Do the Stars Need a Reason to Shine? is a thought-provoking book by designer Markus Weisbeck, with text by Daniel Martin Feige, exploring visual research through 230 color illustrations, published by Spector Books.

Designer Markus Weisbeck has had a sustained focus in recent years on basic visual research. This book presents eighteen visual works created between 2011 and 2022. Most of the designs are predicated on the principle of improvisational loops. Interim results are repeatedly tested and varied until a final theme and form emerge from the process. Weisbeck also applies this mode of thinking, which is quite familiar to designers, outside the parameters of commissioned work: the results of his ongoing visual research are presented here in context.

Markus Weisbeck is a designer and professor of graphic design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and at the Paju Typography Institute in Korea (since 2017). Daniel Martin Feige is a professor whose research and writing focuses on philosophical aesthetics and philosophical anthropology at their point of intersection with classical notions of practical and theoretical philosophy.

History of Press Graphics 1819–1921

Step back in time to a captivating era where art and storytelling converged flawlessly in the pages of newspapers and magazines. History of Press Graphics 1819–1921 is an exceptional compendium celebrating the artistry of graphic journalism and political cartoons from 1819 to 1921. The book about the golden era of the illustrated press was published by TASCHEN and is authored by Alexander Roob.

Covering a wide range from 1819 to 1921, this collection features a wealth of news graphics, political cartoons, and satirical masterpieces. Renowned artists like Jean Cocteau, Juan Gris, and Käthe Kollwitz share the spotlight with the often-overlooked “special artists” of their time, including Thomas Nast, Honoré Daumier, and Gustave Doré, whose remarkable works have been rediscovered within these pages.

Beyond being a mere historical artifact, the rich and diverse press work showcased in the compendium holds immense significance in the world of art. It served as a pioneering influence on modern artistic expression, laying the groundwork for revolutionary techniques, from proto-cinematic narratives to daring forays into abstraction.

Intriguingly, the book takes us on a journey into the mind of the great artist Vincent Van Gogh, revealing his deep fascination with the illustrated press. For him, it wasn’t just an artistic inspiration, but a reflection of the spirit of social reform. Van Gogh’s extensive collection of press graphics led him to consider it nothing less than a “Bible for Artists.”

In summary, this captivating compendium offers a glimpse into the golden age of graphic journalism, which continues to influence and inspire the world of art today. It is a must-read for anyone who appreciates the unique fusion of images and words that defined this exceptional art form.
