Paula Scher—Type Is Image

Exhibtion at the Neue Sammlung

Author: Josephine Schroeder

Since June 2023, the exhibition Paula Scher—Type Is Image has been showcased at Die Neue Sammlung in Munich. Paula Scher, a pioneer in graphic design for over five decades, began as an art director in the 1970s, gaining influence through her unique typographic style. In 1991, she joined Pentagram’s New York office, leading a global team crafting brand identities, signage, packaging, and publications.

Guided by her belief that “words have meaning, and type has spirit,” Scher’s typographic work resonates emotionally, even without reading. She redefined the language of performing arts through her iconic Public Theater identity and integrated custom typefaces into modern branding. Her environmental graphics transformed streets into dynamic type installations, while her personal map artworks reinvented the world with handwritten lettering.

In Type is Image, Die Neue Sammlung continues its tradition of showcasing contemporary designers. Paula Scher responded with an immersive exhibition, enveloping visitors in her creations. From floor to walls, suspended letters to posters, her works captivate. Even display cases incorporate letters, offering fresh perspectives and captivating interplays. This unique installation provides a special encounter with Scher’s artistry, featuring works from her early career to today. Encompassing projects like the Public Theater’s identity and the post-Hurricane Sandy Rockaway Beach campaign, the exhibition reveals the breadth of Scher’s diverse oeuvre. Have a look and enjoy the exhibition!
