MASCARADE

The 4 graphic designers of atelier YOUPI found themselves sorely deprived when the confinement arrived – since their orders were mostly suspended. Locked down but not resigned, they responded graphically to the COVID-19 health and economic crisis. During these 50 strange days, 19 ideas took shape, following the news : shortages of medical equipment, security management of the crisis, austerity, solidarity with the most affected, lies of the State, impasse of capitalism… To keep track of that time and glimpse other possible futures

Coexisting

Coexisting is messy, it’s claustrophobic, it’s never easy. All the same, we can make it work. We have to.

With this piece I explore the concept of coexistence with a minimal approach. The letters in their different forms, each fighting for their own within the given space it has to share with others.

It poses a question on how we, with our differences, can live together in this space. This shared world. This finite earth that we have to share with each other. This world that is ever chaotic, unjust, ugly, and also beautiful.

WEAREUNITED.

Visual representation only with type in three different languages with the same message “We are united”. The graphic mixs the three languages (English, mandarin and catalan) creating the different combos and posibilities.

take and take

Today’s world is shaped by global inequality and injustice. Instead of sharing and giving there exists an imbalance — people keep taking and taking… While many live in abundance, they continue to enrich themselves at the expense of those who are destitute. We have to share our wealth in order to coexist equally.

Shelter

To coexist means to change our concepts of how things should be because of how they always were. We need to stop preying on each other and find compassion, tolerance. See past preconceptions. We need to be each other’s shelter.

The value of words

This work wants to invite people to think of words that we need to preserve and eliminate to coexist with each other. It’s a participative work that wants to stimulate a serious consideration on the value of words.

Introspection

Once we get cut off from all external noise, surroundings, interactions and routines, all we are left with is ourselves and our thoughts. It can be the most challenging dialogue of all, when all around there’s only silence. Coexisting begins with oneself and then it’s projected outwards. This lockdown has been a good exercise on that.

COEXIST ON SPACESHIP EARTH

For me, to coexist is to build a working relationship. While we live and share the same space and time, to live in peace and take considerations of other’s needs is like being each other’s roommates/crew maters. To treat each other how we want to be treated, to be respectful, to agree to disagree, to have necessary boundaries while still being supportive and caring.

The concept derives from quotes by two of recent history’s most visionary futurists. R. Buckminster Fuller wrote, “We are all astronauts on a little spaceship called Earth.” And Marshall McLuhan wrote, “There are no passengers on spaceship earth, we are all crew.”

Humanity

Humanity must coexist!
The variety of typeweights as a representation of our difference and similarities. We all play a role that makes our earth, communities and families complete. The circle is a universal symbol that represents the notions of wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, and eternity.
