The pelican couple is one of two bird motifs that I have drawn and printed at Colorama as a 5-color riso print. Then I printed each print by hand with a color in linocut.

In grateful remembrance of the great teacher Hans Peter Willberg, a few years ago we opted for a reasonably priced softcover edition in order to make the craft knowledge that Willberg and Forssman collected available to a broader public.

A CNC-milled section made of HDF picks up the letters and allows you to deliver messages with 2 x 8 letters: in daily interaction, as a gift or as a panoramic set box for yourself. The 24 special characters prove to be special useful.
The four fonts we have used (QUESTA, SOLEIL, gitan and utopia) have been chosen for aesthetics and distinctness, of two alphabets we use uppercase, of the other two only the Commons. The box itself is deliberately not foil-laminated, it would be a pity for the dull black …

Riso Booklet: It Was All a Dream—Dubai Diaries
Born and raised in Madrid, adopted by Barcelona and Dubai in the past years, Ruben Sánchez is an artist with a strong, colorful graphic style that resonates through all of his projects. Coming from the cultural worlds of graffiti and skateboarding, Sánchez mixes techniques and influences from each field, working on all kind of materials from canvases, murals, reclaimed wood, sculptures or installations. His artworks can be found all around the globe, as a part of art festivals, humanitarian projects or international exhibitions but also as “uncommissioned” works in all kind of places. Sánchez gave Slanted’s creative director Lars Harmsen a “carte blanche“ to create a compilation of his works produced during his time in Dubai. The booklet was printed by the well-known riso-workshop Drucken3000 in Berlin.

Slanted Magazine #32—Dubai
In Spring 2018 the Slanted editors took a close-up look at the contemporary design scene of Dubai. A city—when described by many people—that is all sickening shine and has no soul, an air-conditioned bubble of hype whose hubris guarantees imminent cultural and ecological Armageddon. They believe the UAE to act as a kind of narcissistic mutating mirror to the emerging anxieties of the West.
But Dubai and the whole region, originally a piece of desert sparsely populated by Bedouins, is now transforming itself rapidly into a center, if not the world’s greatest center, of trade, finance, and tourism. And moreover, something important happened in the last few years: Culture! Today, a new Arab world is being plotted and planned. The entire Gulf is teeming with initiatives—from the most public to the most private—to change and reinvent seemingly immutable rules, regimes, edicts, and assumptions, culminating, perhaps, in the stated intention to work more closely together. The Gulf states have a past, and they will have a future. The contours of that future are legible in this Slanted issue!

Brasilia #5 – Abfall
Wann brauchen wir etwas nicht mehr, und wer trifft diese Entscheidung? In der fünften Ausgabe des Brasilia-Magazins begeben sich Gestalterinnen und Gestalter auf die Suche nach einer Definition von dem, was irgendwo übrig ist, was irgendwem zu viel ist oder was irgendwann un-brauchbar wird.
Modedesignerin Claudia Bumb macht mit ihrer Kollektion auf Plastikmüll im Meer aufmerksam, bunte Inseln aus Kunststoff – so groß wie Deutschland. Malte Uchtmann hat übermalte Graffitis an Häusern fotografiert, und André Nakonz erzählt, wie verbranntes Material neuen Fassadenschutz bietet. Ob das Kunst ist oder weg kann, weiß Barbara Hindahl. Stefan Finger zeigt Menschen auf den Philippinen, die im Müll leben und sterben und Christian Werner fotografierte die Kinder des Irak-Kriegs. Luise Schlütsmeier und Vivian Dehning besuchten alte Menschen im Seniorenheim und fragten, was bleibt, wenn die Zeit kurz wird. Die Sichtweisen sind vielseitig und zeigen, dass das, was wir scheinbar nicht brauchen, manchmal eine Perspektive ist, oft durch feste Konzepte nicht integrierbar ist, aber immer Menschen braucht, die mutig aufstehen und neue Lösungen schaffen. Menschen, die gestalten!

In October 2016 the designers of this Riso Booklet spent an intense and exhausting week in Tokyo, were they joined a shared workshop together with students from the Tokyo University of the Arts. POSTER REX—Diary of an Approach. Voices in Times of Political Tensions
In summer 2017 Lars Harmsen and Markus Lange went on tour and printed silkscreen posters with a group of artists from Poland working with local artists in Athens, Istanbul, Moscow and Kiev. Now you can order the two limited publications (114 pages / black / white 108 pages = 222 pages) and four DIN A3 Riso Prints for 30.– Euro in a nice designed slipcase. Only 200 copies were printed.
POSTER REX was founded in 2014 by the graphic designers Lars Harmsen (Munich) and Markus Lange (Leipzig) from Studio Farn. For each session they invite an artist to create unique posters, which are produced in various screen printing workshops around the world. All posters are screen-printed by hand or printed with other digital or analogue techniques. Each session has its own theme. POSTER REX also offers workshops for students. The collection now includes over 1,500 unique posters. A number of posters have been curated for exhibitions.
Limited Athens Special Edition / Tote Bag + Photo Essay + Risograph Booklet
On occasion of the release of Slanted Magazine #30—Athens, a limited special edition has been released which is exclusively available in the Slanted Shop. The edition contains a screen printed tote bag, designed by Blaqk, a photo essay by photographer Daniel Rupp and a risograph booklet, designed by Xenia Fastnacht, produced at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe.
Tote Bag
The tote bag has been designed by Blaqk. Their works are a combination of graphic elements—calligraphic forms, letters, lines, geometric shapes, patterns, negative space, textures. They create impressive backdrops/murals with their artworks on a lot of surfaces like big walls in Athens and other cities. For Slanted’s special edition they produced an unique piece of art silkscreened on a tote bag.

Athens—a city with a historical importance battered by the financial crises. Listening to residents one can hear a wide range of voices from very optimistic up to dystopian. Catching this contrarian mood was the idea of photographer Daniel Rupp for this photo essay. It gives a glimpse into the daily life of a city that has had a fundamental role for Europe.

Riso Booklet—Greetings from Greece
Since a few years, a new design trend seems to appear in Greece. The ancient aesthetics, history and traditions of the country serve as a source of inspiration, but are to be reinterpreted. More and more creatives are striving to show a modern Greek style and produce regional as much as possible.
This riso booklet is an excerpt from the diploma thesis “Greetings from Greece” by Xenia Fastnacht from the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe, in which she deals with the contrast between country-specific stereotypes and new creative approaches in Greece.

SPRING #14 – Yo Future
Man muss sich die Zukunft ausmalen, damit sie auch so werden kann, wie man sie sich vorstellt. Und man muss sich auch das allerschlimmste Szenario vorstellen können, damit man es verhindern kann. Die aktuelle Weltlage ist also Thema der neuen Ausgabe des Illustrationsmagazins SPRING. In einer Zeit, in der Kriege und Verfolgung zunehmen, Umweltprobleme immer größer werden und der Populismus sich neuen Raum erobert, ist es nicht immer ganz einfach, Stellung zu beziehen und vor allem auch kreative Antworten zu geben.
Und so beschäftigen sich die Zeichnerinnen ganz persönlich mit dieser Situation: Sie berichten von ihrem Gefühl, in der Konsumgesellschaft gefangen zu sein, fragen sich, welchen Einfluss auf die Umwelt sie haben und ob man überhaupt etwas tun kann, obwohl man sich machtlos fühlt. Oder hilft es vielleicht schon, bewusster einkaufen zu gehen und sich anders zu ernähren? In den spielerischen, ernsten und humorvollen Beiträgen findet sich eine Vielzahl von Zugängen zu diesen Themen, es werden etwa liebenswerte Phantasiewesen erschaffen, die aber versehentlich auch mal die Welt zerstören. Und ein Großteil der Geschichten zeigt, dass es doch schon gute Ansätze gibt, wie wir selbst die Zukunft positiv gestalten können, getreu dem Motto der Ausgabe: Yo Future!
SPRING wurde 2004 in Hamburg gegründet. Seitdem erscheint jedes Jahr im Sommer ein neuer Band der Anthologie, der die unterschiedlichsten Arbeiten aus den Bereichen Comic, Illustration und freier Zeichnung zu jeweils einem Thema bündelt. Die Gruppe besteht seit Beginn ausschließlich aus Frauen und ist mittlerweile ein solides und wichtiges Netzwerk für Zeichnerinnen in Deutschland.
Slanted Magazine #30—Athens
In spring 2017 the Slanted editors embarked on their trip to Athens to take a close-up look at the contemporary design scene there. At the same time, the Documenta took place for the first time at two sites. Athens, in parallel to Kassel, offered the perfect canvas: differences between rich and poor, between Germany and Greece, but also between different cultures in Europe, facing crisis, boundaries and displacement. All the designers Slanted met though talked very positively about the event, bringing back art and life to Athens, suffering from draconian cuts in culture budgets.
The list of designers Slanted met with boasts everyone from legends such as Michalis Katzourakis to young, wild creatives who are creating exciting voices in their own right. Well known figures from Athen’s contemporary design scene such as Bend, The Birthdays Design, Blaqk, Bob Studio, Dylsectic, G Design Studio, Irini Gonou, Luminous Design Group, MAMA Silkscreen, MNP, Parachute, StudioJugi, Typical Organization, Urban Calligraphy and Ifigenia Vasiliou allowed a glimpse into their world. Not only can you find their brilliant works in the new issue, Slanted also provides a deeper look at their opinions and views through video interviews that can be watched online on our video platform for free.
Illustrations, photography, interviews and essays complement the issue thematically.
