White Fungus

Taiwan-based independent arts magazine White Fungus returns to print for the first time since the pandemic with the release of its 17th issue. The new edition will be out in early June.

The issue features in-depth articles on bats, avant-garde jazz group The Art Ensemble of Chicago, plus an exploration of the world of Taiwanese folk religion and its connection to art, politics, tourism, and the criminal underworld.

There is video art from Brazil and a look back on composer Annea Lockwood’s London years in the 1960s and 1970s, during which she created her legendary Glass Concerts and Piano Burnings. The issue also features a look back on the life and work of Paul Celan, often called Europe’s greatest post-war poet.

White Fungus was founded in Wellington, New Zealand, in 2004 by brothers Ron Hanson and Mark Hanson. In 2009, the Hansons relocated back to Taiwan, where the magazine has since been based.

Every cover of the magazine is derived from a scan of a can of white fungus the Hansons discovered in their local supermarket in Taiwan. These covers provide few clues as to the content hidden within the magazine’s pages.

White fungus is a wild mushroom used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Today it is commonly served in soup as a local delicacy. It is believed to be good for immunity and the brain, heart, and skin.

The Neubad Plakat

We are glad to introduce to you our publication The Neubad Plakat—A Contemporary Design Phenomenon, which is out today!

In the Swiss province, at the foot of picturesque mountains, on a quiet lake, a biotope of avant-garde design has formed. The self-proclaimed “Poster Town” Lucerne has managed to merge the boundaries between art and design, creating a contemporary design phenomenon in the process. We are talking about the posters for the Neubad Cultural Center, which have long since found their way out of the valley and all over the world.

The posters, in minimalist black and white, not only set contemporary design trends, but playfully transcend the boundaries of our perceptual habits. Progressive illustration and experimental typography create subcultural codes on a highly cultural level that remain unpretentious despite their artistic daring.

The Neubad Plakat is an aesthetic phenomenon and an expression of a social change that has always been expressed in fashion, music, design—in other words, in the zeitgeist. The book as a collection of curated pieces that in itself formulated a new expression of this emerged aesthetic.

Feel welcome to join us for the vernissage of the exhibition Postertown goes Postercity and the release event of The Neubad Plakat on June 16th, 2023 starting at 7 p.m. at the Raum für drastische Maßnamen (Oderstraße 34, 10247 Berlin).

Get Ready for The AI Revolution With LABASAD

If you work in design and creativity, in 2023 you have probably asked yourself this question: will AI take my job? Can I compete with a machine that generates creative solutions in a matter of seconds? Should I keep training if my work will soon be automated?

Professionals wishing to start or continue training in graphic design, illustration and other creative professions are facing a year marked by fears about the future of their profession. Faced with this new reality, some institutions have begun to provide solutions to the emerging needs of professionals. LABASAD, Barcelona School of Arts and Design is a pioneering School that provides answers to these questions through its Online Masters and has already adapted its training to facilitate this: introducing Artificial Intelligence subjects to almost all of its Online Masters.

In an interview with the CEO of LABASAD, he tells us that although the automation of routine tasks or the generation of general designs could lead to job cuts, it will also be an opportunity for those professionals who know how to adapt and introduce AI as a powerful tool to streamline creative processes.” In fact, it is becoming increasingly clear that the value of these creative professions will be outlined in three categories: originality and unique perspective (building creative solutions not based on an algorithm that repeats patterns); the ability to observe and analyze with a critical eye (having the theoretical knowledge and experience to understand when a project works and when it doesn’t); and the human ability to connect and convey emotional messages.

LABASAD has offered more than 20 Online Masters in English and Spanish specializing in Design, Creativity and Illustration since 2017. These have been created with a 100% practical methodology, with students and teachers from all over the world, such as England, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, and many other locations.

In a changing ecosystem, LABASAD stands out for a teaching staff made up of active professionals and experts in their respective sector, where many of them have worked for brands with a global presence such as Adobe, Spotify, Apple, Ikea, or Netflix. By combining their profession with teaching and thus, knowing the techniques, tools, current trends, and needs that companies demand today, they are able to offer a unique and fulfilling experience for students.

The future has already arrived with Artificial Intelligence, are you ready?

Slanted in Amsterdam: The Rodina

For its 41st issue, Slanted checked out Amsterdam’s design scene and visited a selection of the city’s most brilliant minds—creatives and designers located in the charming capital of the Netherlands. Amongst others we were happy to visit Tereza and Vit from The Rodina, meet them in their studio, and talk about a lot of relevant and interesting design-related topics!

The Rodina has been researching performativity within graphic design since 2015 and coined the term performative design (in the field of visual communication) which is further described in the Action to Surface publication. In their work, Tereza and Vit often explore the spatial and interactive possibilities of virtual environments as a space for new thoughts and aesthetics that come forward from between culture and technology.

The Rodina’s work can be found in the Slanted Magazine #41—Amsterdam. Additionally we shot a video interview with them, talking about their point of view on design and opinions about the future. Take a look at the Amsterdam issue and the video platform for diverse opinions, impressions, inspiration, and motivation!

WASTECARE

Textile producer AIZOME’s innovative ULTRA dyeing method not only produces textiles that are healthy but also waste that’s healthy, which they are now promoting as the skincare product WASTECARE.

Japanese-German textile startup AIZOME in partnership with Serviceplan Innovation launches WASTECARE, a premium skincare product that is wastewater from their textile dyeing factory. Because the AIZOME ULTRA method only uses plants, water, and ultrasound instead of synthetic chemicals, the wastewater, like the textiles, has natural health benefits, such as anti-inflammation, pain-relief, and skin rejuvenation. WASTECARE is being sent out to key opinion leaders in the fashion and textile industries to spotlight the damage caused on the environment and health, while also providing an innovative solution.

Since not only the product itself has an exciting story, but we at Slanted also consider the design of the packaging very exciting, we had the opportunity to ask a few questions to designer Han Gao from Workbyworks & Serviceplan Innovation’s Art director duo Rohil Borole, Kai West Schlosser:

Are there special requirements for a packaging design if it is to be sustainable? Which materials were a consideration for this?
This is a product promoting a 100% chemical free dyeing method developed by a sustainable textile company, so it was crucial to minimize our footprint. The identity we developed is in the realm of luxury products but unlike the ones on the market, we do not make use of unnecessary packing materials. The entire box was designed such that it can be mailed out without an extra shipping box. Working closely with an industrial designer, we reduced material wastage in the assembly of the box. It follows a six-by-six grid pin registry, upon which all the sheets and trays are stacked. It was crucial for everything used to be recycled and recyclable. In creating this packaging, we wanted every aspect to reflect the company’s core belief and their technology.

How far did the consistency and color of the product inspire you to design the packaging?
The dyeing process was a predominant source of inspiration. In the first step, the dye itself is brown. Once the cotton balls are dipped and then exposed in air, oxidation causes the color change to blue.
In our printed editorial, you see the color intensify from one section to another just like the cotton balls change color upon repeated dyeing. As you unfold these sheets, you reach the final layer which is a juxtaposition of the product and the byproduct of the process—wastewater serum and a piece of AIZOME fabric. The fabric is much brighter, and the wastewater is muted, but through the skincare routine we show how both have value.
The wastewater is unfiltered in that it still has tiny indigo particles suspended in the body. The brownish tint is a lighter version of the original vat of dye. You can also see that the usage of color in the packaging is earthy like in the very first layer of the packaging: the recycled cardboard, reinforcing the idea that all things start from nature. It can also be described as neutral; it does not boast or bias the user.

Was it a challenge to design a bilingual package and find the right typeface for it?
It may have seemed like a challenge at first but we’re a small team of international creatives and two of our colleagues are Japanese. So is the co-founder of AIZOME. We were surrounded with inspiration, and this truly helped mold the story of the product. With their support we could ensure that the English translation of Japanese quotes and haikus had the same depth as the original content.
Regarding typography, we use three different typefaces: Neue Haas Grotesk for English text, paired with Midashi Gothic Pro MB31 for Japanese text—two timeless typefaces, matching AIZOME’s reinvention of traditional aizome dyeing.
For titles, we created our own, custom Ultra One type. We used the traditional Mincho type Hiragino Mincho Pro W6 as a base for this to reflect the rich history of the ancient Japanese dyeing tradition. We then used p5js to generate frequency waves on top, which represent ultrasound, which is the core of AIZOME’s innovative dyeing technology.

From the press text: According to the UN, the textile industry is the second largest water polluter, using over 1,500 synthetic chemicals in production. These chemicals not only cause pollution but also harm workers and wearers. In most dermatitis cases, the reaction is triggered by dye chemicals. Traditional plant-based dyeing lacks longevity for mass production. AIZOME ULTRA offers a solution by using ultrasonic dyeing to bind plant molecules to fibers, resulting in lasting color and health benefits. Medicinal plants like indigo provide anti-inflammatory properties, rubia helps alleviate menstrual pain, and turmeric acts as an antioxidant. The National Eczema Association recognizes AIZOME’s benefits for sensitive skin. A study with the University of Cambridge demonstrated indigo leaf’s healing properties for skin injuries.

To differentiate themselves in the textile industry, AIZOME introduced WASTECARE, a skincare product made from tested and certified industrial wastewater. The packaging, designed in collaboration with Workbyworks Studio, offers an intimate unboxing experience and combines practicality with aesthetics. It features layers of cardboard for protection during shipping and promotes recycling. Each unboxing stage reveals AIZOME’s story through data visualization, fabric, and the face serum.

European Design Awards and Festival 2023 in Luxembourg

In the heart of Europe, in one of the smallest countries in the world, with the European Court of Justice and citizens from diverse nations like few others, this year’s European Design Festival took place in Luxembourg! After experiencing a fantastic time in Tallinn last year, we were eagerly anticipating what Luxembourg had in store for us. From May 31st to June 4th, there were conferences, studio visits, workshops, a designers’ market, and exhibitions—a vibrant program that allowed visitors to discover creative hotspots. Design in Luxembourg? Yes, it exists, and how! Creative hubs are also emerging outside the capital—a fascinating time to travel to Luxembourg …

Moreover, there were two unmissable evenings dedicated to honoring the best in design: the Luxembourg Design Awards, where Julia Kahl, Co-founder of Slanted, chaired the jury, and the European Design Awards, which attracted many creatives from across Europe to Luxembourg.

And we are particularly delighted to announce that we were awarded Gold in the Editorial Design category for the book The Nest by Scott Massey. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to this year’s juries (Branding, Print, Digital) who had to navigate through a record number of submissions.

The most successful agency of the year is honored with the Agency of the Year Award. This year, the award went to Studio Dumbar/DEPT®. The jury prize went to wijstudio for their Neighbourhood Campaign. Three projects also received the additional Best of Show Award: Fabrique [brands, design and interaction] for “Closer to Johannes Vermeer” (Digital), Dizaino agentūra for Klaipėda city visual identity (Branding), and Bloemendaal & Dekkers for the artistic annual report “Transform.”

We eagerly anticipate the upcoming year when the European Design Festival will be held in Naples, Italy. We encourage everyone to participate in the awards and wish you the best of luck for next year!

CXI Conference 2023

For the 13th time, the CXI Conference 2023, Europe’s biggest Brand-Identity and Corporate-Design conference, took place on May 26th at Lokschuppen Bielefeld.

What feels like Christmas for designers, is a day long event with five brand-talks, always featuring the perspective of client and agency—both sharing their insights into the process of developing, inventing or reinventing, or sharpening a brand. This leads to interesting and honest insights into what it takes to shape a successful brand. Client and agency share not only the their achievements, but also failures and more difficult episodes of the process. The audience of 1,000 consists not only of designers, but also of professionals from the business sector and client side—both profiting from the talks held at CXI Conference 2023.

This year had again an exciting line-up
Škoda (Prag) × Strichpunkt (Berlin) provided insight into the re-design process, in which they decided to put special focus on color and let it unfold its effect for the brand. Founderland (Berlin) × R/GA (Berlin), a heartfelt project, driven by the idea of a nation-branding, creating a strong space for the people involved. Jokolade (München) × Designstudio Mathilda Mutant (Mainz) was a talk that made your mouth water, telling the story about creating a loving and colorful branding for an ethically produced chocolate. Veolia Towers Hamburg (Hamburg) × Sherpa Design (Hamburg), a strong re-brand for a basketball team, creating a strong visual for the Basketball-Bundesliga while bringing the community together. Meta (Menlo Park) × Saffron Consultants (Madrid) talked about their approach of a 3-dimensional dynamic branding—not only in the virtual but also in the 2D world.

Interrupted by a lunch break with delicious vegan food and a coffee break, there was like always the great opportunity to exchange ideas with the other creatives and visitors of the fair.

The conference was accompanied by some exciting booths of friends and colleagues of ours: The Institut für Buchgestaltung from Bielefeld (Institute of Book Design) with some great publications, print-studio Letterjazz who produced the amazing conference-boxes and name-cards (who also produce our beautiful high quality business cards), and Metapaper, providing the paper for the notebooks and programms for the conference who have also been a companion in various publications for years.

As always, the CXI was a blast and a great source of inspiration and encouragement! Thanks to the CXI team and Robert Paulmann (the initiator of the CXI) for having us again, we are always looking forward to this event—same for next year!

Postertown goes Postercity

In mid-June, the exhibition Postertown goes Postercity opens in Berlin accompanying our publication The Neubad Plakat, which will be published soon.

“In the Swiss province, at the foot of picturesque mountains, on a quiet lake, a biotope of avant-garde design has formed. The self-proclaimed poster town of Lucerne has managed to merge the boundaries between art and design, creating a contemporary design phenomenon. We’re talking about the posters for the Neubad Cultural Center, which have long since found their way out of the valley and all over the world.” (Fons Hickmann)

The Neubad graphic pool, a collection of designers that design the posters for Neubad Lucerne on a voluntary basis, now consists of over 100 designers from all over Europe. Over the past ten years, more than 550 posters have been created. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Neubad and the impressive collection of posters has prompted us to honor the collection as an exhibition. A selection of nearly 150 posters will be on display at the Raum für drastische Maßnahmen in Berlin.

To celebrate this 10-year milestone Slanted Publishers is releasing a publication which contains every poster designed for Neubad over the past ten years. The book release will happen on the same day as the opening of the exhibition. It will be available soon.

Both the exhibition and the book were realized by Erich Brechbühl, Fons Hickmann, Sam Steiner, Lea Hinrichs and Sven Lindhorst-Emme—all graphic designers who are passionate about posters and books.

The exhibition is aimed at all those who share the same passion for posters or who simply want to see beautiful posters.

Ho Ho Ho Chi Minh

We are happy to introduce Ho Ho Ho Chi Minh—a compelling book that offers a profound glimpse into modern Vietnam and provides valuable lessons for turbulent times by combining insightful quotes from Ho Chí Minh with Michael Herman’s captivating photographs.

“It is a sign of wisdom to negotiate instead of fighting” spoke Ho Chí Minh, Vietnamese revolutionary and politician. He died in 1969 during the Vietnam War and did not live to see the withdrawal of the American invaders and the reunification of his beloved homeland. As prime minister and president until his death, he determined the destiny of his country, whose people affectionately called him Uncle Hồ. Influenced by deep Marxist-Leninist convictions, he became a worldwide symbol of the striving for self-determination. Even today, gratitude for this is omnipresent in the Vietnamese population.

The book is a collection of selected quotes from Ho Chí Minh juxtaposed with Michael Herman’s expressive photographs of modern Vietnam. Especially today, in turbulent times of increasing wars and crises, it can be useful to take a look at the history of this special people, and in the best case to learn from it.
