Tÿpo St.Gallen 2023

The three-day typography symposium Tÿpo St.Gallen 2023 holds a significant position as the most important gathering for designers in the German-speaking region. This year, in its 7th edition, the event aims to delve into discussions about topics that are often left unexplored or overlooked, asking the questions that have seldom been asked before.

With a lineup of approximately 20 distinguished speakers, Tÿpo St. Gallen 2023 offers a unique opportunity for attendees to gain insights into the professional lives of these industry experts. The symposium will be a platform where speakers share their day-to-day work experiences, courageously addressing taboo subjects like dealing with criticism and facing online sh*tstorms, coping with setbacks and doubts, handling financial matters and clients, exploring the Darknet’s influence, and navigating the world of artificial intelligence. Attendees might even be treated to some well-kept trade secrets.

The theme for this year’s Tÿpo St. Gallen is What nobody talks about, inviting participants to join the discussions and presentations from 10th to 12th November, 2023. The event is proudly organized by the esteemed School of Design St. Gallen.

Through this symposium, the organizers aspire to inspire designers to open up about the often unspoken challenges they face, fostering an environment of mutual learning and growth within the design community. Tÿpo St. Gallen 2023 is poised to be an unforgettable and enriching experience, where participants can engage with candid discussions, gain fresh perspectives, and forge meaningful connections with fellow professionals.

Typeface of the Month: Spades

Spades is a contemporary Baroque typeface that blends historical influences of ornate 18th century typography with the modern device of an inktrap. Designed by Oakland-based type designer Sascha Hopson, the family was released through Order Type Foundry in July 2023.

The family explores the juxtaposition of two distinct historical periods: the Black Arts Movement and the Baroque Era. While seemingly contradictory, Spades finds an overlap and forges its voice as a typeface through the extravagance, expression, and attitude of the respective eras.

The origins of Spades began with Hopson reflecting on the work of and paying homage to revered artist David Hammons. A key piece of inspiration early on in the project was Hammons’ collection of body prints starting from the 1960s. The use of spades or shovels were frequent motifs throughout his early work, centered around confronting and reclaiming the deprecating racial slur “spade.” Beyond his direct confrontation of this language, Hammons used perversion in his art to ask provocative questions such as, what is Black art, what does it mean to make Black art, and can it be free to be anything?

The Spades family originated from sketch explorations. Foundationally, the base of Spades is an old-style design. When Hopson dove deeper into stylings of the 18th century, he discovered the scalloped-serif construction of Fleischmann’s work. Through early exploratory sketches, he attempted to combine the modern visual device of an inktrap with these historical foundations. This exercise in merging two opposing styles leaned into the thinking of uncovering expression and subversion in Black art. The amalgamation created tension that—through later refinement—found a visual relationship.

Spades is a meditation on subversion through these juxtapositions, and an homage to the expansiveness of blackness in the medium of a typeface.

Do the Stars Need a Reason to Shine?

Do the Stars Need a Reason to Shine? is a thought-provoking book by designer Markus Weisbeck, with text by Daniel Martin Feige, exploring visual research through 230 color illustrations, published by Spector Books.

Designer Markus Weisbeck has had a sustained focus in recent years on basic visual research. This book presents eighteen visual works created between 2011 and 2022. Most of the designs are predicated on the principle of improvisational loops. Interim results are repeatedly tested and varied until a final theme and form emerge from the process. Weisbeck also applies this mode of thinking, which is quite familiar to designers, outside the parameters of commissioned work: the results of his ongoing visual research are presented here in context.

Markus Weisbeck is a designer and professor of graphic design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and at the Paju Typography Institute in Korea (since 2017). Daniel Martin Feige is a professor whose research and writing focuses on philosophical aesthetics and philosophical anthropology at their point of intersection with classical notions of practical and theoretical philosophy.

History of Press Graphics 1819–1921

Step back in time to a captivating era where art and storytelling converged flawlessly in the pages of newspapers and magazines. History of Press Graphics 1819–1921 is an exceptional compendium celebrating the artistry of graphic journalism and political cartoons from 1819 to 1921. The book about the golden era of the illustrated press was published by TASCHEN and is authored by Alexander Roob.

Covering a wide range from 1819 to 1921, this collection features a wealth of news graphics, political cartoons, and satirical masterpieces. Renowned artists like Jean Cocteau, Juan Gris, and Käthe Kollwitz share the spotlight with the often-overlooked “special artists” of their time, including Thomas Nast, Honoré Daumier, and Gustave Doré, whose remarkable works have been rediscovered within these pages.

Beyond being a mere historical artifact, the rich and diverse press work showcased in the compendium holds immense significance in the world of art. It served as a pioneering influence on modern artistic expression, laying the groundwork for revolutionary techniques, from proto-cinematic narratives to daring forays into abstraction.

Intriguingly, the book takes us on a journey into the mind of the great artist Vincent Van Gogh, revealing his deep fascination with the illustrated press. For him, it wasn’t just an artistic inspiration, but a reflection of the spirit of social reform. Van Gogh’s extensive collection of press graphics led him to consider it nothing less than a “Bible for Artists.”

In summary, this captivating compendium offers a glimpse into the golden age of graphic journalism, which continues to influence and inspire the world of art today. It is a must-read for anyone who appreciates the unique fusion of images and words that defined this exceptional art form.

100 Best Poster 22 Yearbook

The 100 Best Poster 22 Yearbook was published last month to coincide with the exhibition. Every year, the association 100 Beste Plakate e.V. awards the most innovative and groundbreaking poster designs from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The yearbook, developed by various graphic designers and design studios, extensively showcases all the winners and their designs. It is considered a pulse-check for both creatives and advertisers alike.

The studio lindhorst-emme+hinrichs has conceived the current yearbook as an ever-changing unique piece: Ten differently colored papers, in varying combinations, ensure that the cover, endpapers, and flyleaves never have the same color, making each copy a one-of-a-kind item.

A thematic focus of the book revolves around the now partly iconic poster designs for Neubad in Lucerne. In the Swiss province, an ecosystem of avant-garde design has formed over the years. Over 80 graphic designers have created approximately 550 posters for the cultural center to date, with 23 of them being recognized among the 100 best in recent years. In a recent collaboration with Erich BrechbühlFons HickmannLea HinrichsSam Steiner, and Sven Lindhorst-Emme, we successfully released a book highlighting the Neubad Plakate.

Type Trends Lookbook Vol 5 / 2023

The Type Trends Lookbook Vol 5 / 2023: an exploration of contemporary visual counter-trends as a response to the unpredictable events of recent years. Presented as an international preview at the Offf Festival in Barcelona, the 2023 edition of the Type Trends Lookbook is now available: more than 400 pages of visual and typographic exploration curated by the TypeCampus team and sponsored by the Italian foundry Zetafonts.

Since the release of the 2022 Type Trends, not much appears to have changed so much in the world of graphic and type design. A mix between artificial nostalgia, normcore brutalism and digital euphoria is still defining visuals. At the same time, the world has been impacted by many unexpected, highly improbable events. They are what sociologist Nassim Nicholas Taleb calls Black Swans: wars, global pandemic, populism and hate fueled by social digital technologies, the rise of artificial intelligence and a global environmental crisis. In this current state of global confusion, the pursuit of trends seems trivial and irrelevant, merely a product of a capitalistic and production-oriented perspective.

“Inspired by the concept of understanding the visual response to the many unexpected events of our times, our team has decided to meet some of the most interesting and innovative creators and thinkers to transform this 2023 issue in a conversation on the hidden, emerging counter-trends that have arisen in recent years.” Says Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini, concept and creative director of the project.

The Counter Spaces–Typography in the Age of Black Swans presents the work and the thoughts of more than 26 design creators and thinkers to guide the reader in a world of undefined and antagonistic areas in visual and typographic design. These counter-spaces, include not only visual styles, but also business models, work philosophies, and social design considerations.

The Counter Spaces–Typography in the Age of Black Swans is a must-read for anyone interested in graphic design, typography, and their links to the social and cultural zeitgeist. It offers a unique perspective on the role of design in society, and how typography can be used to create meaning and connection in a world that is constantly changing. Whether you are a designer, a student, or simply interested in the way design shapes our world, this book will leave you with a new appreciation for the power of typography to inspire, engage, and transform.

The Counter Spaces features the work and the words of: Gab Bois, Viktor Baltus (Type Design Class), Beatrice Caciotti, Kevin Cantrell, Ninan Chacko (Monotype), Andy Cruz (House Industries), Jessica Deseo (The Dieline, Print Magazine), Oded Ezer, Brandon Fretwell, Måns Grebäck, Lucas Hesse, Loukas Karnis (TypeRoom), Erik Kessels (Kesselskramer), Deborah Lynne Kugler, Tien Min Liao, Pann Lim (Rubbish Famzine), Kristie Malivindi (JKR), Nunzio Mazzaferro (Collletttivo), Raven Mo, Valerio Monopoli, Kiel D. Stand Der Dinge / State of Things

Stand der Dinge / State of Things is the bachelor thesis of Farina Michelle at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. The book is a typographical exploration of the potential legacy of a person. In the form of lists, she describes her current material possessions, immaterial facts about her persona and precisely described memorabilia. Black boxes and line spacing of different sizes describe the relationship to her objects. Cross-references throughout the book provide insight into how her thoughts are linked and contrast the restrained design, which was modeled on the bureaucratically aloof work of a curator of estate.

The thesis was supervised by Prof. Pierre Pané-Farré and Prof. Vincent Kohlbecher. The book has been shortlisted for the Young Book Design Award.

They gradually fill up with experiences, noteworthy events, and memos, serving as an important structuring medium for many people. Often, they become individual works of art, especially when artists keep a diary. The museum has impressive examples in its collection. The range extends from works by conceptual artist Dieter Roth to Barbara Fahrner’s record from New York during the Islamist terrorist attack in September 2001, and to the contemporary zine Lockdown Diary by Malte Spindler. A special treasure is the “sketchbooks” by Paul Stein, a blend of diary, sketchbook, and literary records.

Bullet journals, too, are lovingly designed tools that help organize and prioritize everyday activities. The exhibition explores the motives and approaches behind filling an initially empty book. Numerous people have responded to the museum’s call and contributed their own works: a diverse collection of notebooks, bullet journals, and diaries has found its way into the exhibition. Interviews with diary writers shed light on individual motivations and methods. Additionally, there will be a virtual exhibition space on Instagram.

In collaboration with the Frankfurt notebook manufacturer nuuna by brandbook, the exhibition also addresses the design of the blank book, which also influences the writing process. Many designs are waiting in the exhibition to be filled.

Slanted in Amsterdam: martens and martens

Embracing Amsterdam’s Creative Pulse! Slanted’s 41st issue embarks on an awe-inspiring journey through the design haven of the Netherlands’ charming capital. We had the incredible pleasure of visiting the brilliant minds of Karel and Diederik Martens from martens and martens, immersing ourselves in their studio and delving into captivating conversations on all things design-related.

Karel Martens (1939) is a graphic designer specializing in typography. His work consists mainly of the design of numerous books and covers. He also designed stamps, coins, building lettering, telephone cards, and monoprints. He taught at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, at Yale University in New Haven, and founded Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem. In 2019, he and his children founded martens and martens.

Their work can be found in the Slanted Magazine #41—Amsterdam. Additionally we shot a video interview with Karel and Diederik, talking about their point of view on design and opinion about the future. Take a look at the Amsterdam issue and the video platform for diverse opinions, impressions, inspiration, and motivation.

The typeface includes a wide range of stylistic sets, allowing the user to choose between three different center heights and a good number of alternate letter shapes. When used in large sizes South East will show its display qualities while still performing perfectly as a text typeface in smaller sizes, making it a super versatile type family. It’s a type with many faces and many different expressions.

South East is available in nine weights across three widths—Condensed, Normal, Expanded—which makes it a family of 54 styles including corresponding Italics. The typeface covers Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts, and more than 220 languages.

Schönste Deutsche Bücher 2023

The 25 Schönste Deutsche Bücher 2023 (25 Most Beautiful German Books of 2023) have been announced. The Stiftung Buchkunst (Book Art Foundation) honors the best-designed books of the year. 603 submissions competed for these coveted awards.

In the competition for the Schönste Deutsche Bücher, two expert juries carefully selected the 25 most beautiful books of the year. Fourteen jurors deliberated for seven days on the submitted titles. The 25 selected books are exemplary in terms of design, concept, and craftsmanship, showcasing a wide range of design and production possibilities.

Christina Schmid, publisher at Prima.Publikationen and a member of the First Jury 2023, commented on this year’s jury work: “Our task is to evaluate how the exterior matches the interior. We highlight those books that consider both the inner and outer aspects together.”

Mark Kiessling, designer and founder of the Berlin bookstore do you read me?! and a member of the Second Jury 2023, shared his experience: “What surprised me was how difficult it can be to make a selection. We no longer approach it subjectively and look for personal favorites; instead, we consider different aspects such as craftsmanship and typography. It’s fascinating to hear the arguments of other jury members, what they focus on and what matters less to them. Each of us has our own background.”

The Preis der Stiftung Buchkunst, endowed with 10,000 euros, will be announced on September 8th, 2023, during the award ceremony at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt. It will be selected by a special jury from the 25 Schönsten Deutschen Bücher. Further information about the ceremony will be announced during the summer.

FIRST IMPRESSION PROMOTIONAL AWARD
The winners of the second competition, the Förderpreis für junge Buchgestaltung (Promotional Award for Young Book Design), have also been chosen. This year, 164 submissions competed for the three prizes, each endowed with 2,000 euros. This competition by the Stiftung Buchkunst recognizes particularly innovative and forward-thinking projects that further develop the medium of the book conceptually.

NEXT IMPRESSION PROMOTIONAL AWARD
The Stiftung Buchkunst will introduce this year’s award winners in the coming weeks through short Instagram Live sessions on their channel @stiftungbuchkunst. The interim director of the Stiftung Buchkunst, Carolin Blöink, will interview the participants about their awarded projects. The three selected works will be extensively showcased from 13th July to 26th August, 2023, in an exhibition at the einBuch.haus in Berlin.

All award-winning titles will be presented at book fairs in Germany and abroad, as well as in numerous exhibitions in libraries and bookstores. The permanent exhibition in the foyer of the Literaturhaus Frankfurt will also continue.

Slanted in Amsterdam: SiR Albert Hotel

Those who regularly follow our channels have surely come across articles about Amsterdam’s design scene (and more will follow). In November 2022, we embarked on an editorial trip to the Dutch capital for Slanted Magazine #41—Amsterdam, where we had the incredible opportunity to meet brilliant minds.

After long and exciting days, we were delighted to find tranquility in the elegant boutique hotel, Sir Albert. Located in the vibrant De Pijp district, it’s just minutes away from the Museum Quarter and offers everything culture enthusiasts and city lovers seek.

With high ceilings and large windows, the rooms blend historic details with clean, modern lines. A mandatory desk allows for quick email checks in the evening before resting on comfortable beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, preparing for the next adventure. Frankly, we didn’t have time for the gym as we explored Amsterdam entirely by bike (a tip we highly recommend to everyone).

IZAKAYA, the culinary hotspot for Asian cuisine with South American influences, served exquisite Japanese dishes alongside exceptional drinks. The breakfast buffet left nothing to be desired.

Our stay was truly delightful, with friendly staff and a stylish yet not over-the-top hotel. For those planning a trip to Amsterdam, here’s a true tip from the Slanted editorial team 😉

Thanks for having us!
