Icarus

“Icarus has become better-known as the flyer who fell from the sky when the wax that joined his wings was melted by the heat of the sun.”
As fascinating and useful the progress of human civilization is, it might be dangerous as well. “Over-Progressing” may become the cause of our annihilation, like the story of Icarus; who flew so high that the sun melted the wax in his wing.
The sentence written in the artwork is a quote from E. O. Wilson, an American biologist, naturalist, and writer; refering to the myth of Icarus.

Night Wanderings, April/May 2020

Inspired by the Robert Adams series ‘Summer Nights, Walking’ I went for a few late night walks around my neighbourhood in north London. I realised that because of lockdown, I hadn’t been out at dark or taken a single photograph for over a month. It felt eerie and unsettling at first. The images were taken on a housing estate near where I live. The swaying trees framed the pockets of light from the windows, each small square representing domesticity, warmth and hope.

Dystopia?

Being born and raised in a Middle-Eastern country with a dictator government, and seeing all the curroption, censorship, embezzlement, military repressions, poverty and etc. Always makes me wonder, are we living in a “Dystopia?”

I CAN’T BREATHE

A reaction to the horrific execution of George Floyd in plain sight of the world. Hopefully his death will lead to the reset of our relationship with our fellow humans and bring about a larger conversation on equality for all.

Buffalo; Plant; Scarecrow; Tree

I am a Romanian artist living and working in Edinburgh, Scotland.  My work involves photography and moving image where I improvise with my body and everyday objects to distort my appearance and create unnatural and subtly distorted characters and scenes.
‘Buffalo’, ‘Plant’, ‘Scarecrow’ and ‘Tree’ are part of a larger series of black and white self-portraits inspired by flora and fauna.

Me or We

Our mindsets inform our actions. When we’re motivated by self-interest alone we can be distanced from our peers and ignorant of their needs.
A “we” mindset establishes a sense of belonging which naturally fosters empathy for our fellow humans.

People Before Profit

How can humankind coexist in a socio-economic system which thrives on the exploitations of others? The notion of coexisting can never be in fruition when there is an exploited working class that works for a lifetime for the benefit of a few. The defining factor of life is money, a capitalist social construct that has poisoned societies with the consistent need to pursue and idolise the commodities, status and power it brings.

Society needs to detach from the selfish neoliberal ideologies that dictate our institutions, technologies and even our personal interactions. A socio-economic system that embodies the concept of coexisting would prioritise the need to put people before profit.

Social Media make us feel closer, especially in times of Corona. This rises hope in many people for positive changes. However, the increasing flow of data also increases energy consumption. Raw materials, which are necessary for infrastructure and equipment, are mined in post-colonial conditions.
