Von der Idee zur Graphic Novel

You want to create comics or graphic novels yourself and are looking for an introduction to graphic storytelling? Dieter Jüdt introduces you step by step to the conception and composition of graphic novels: from structure and storyboard to visual language and image composition to artwork and the search for your own graphic sound.

The experienced draughtsman and lecturer will accompany you all the way to the finished publication. You will learn how to deal with suspense and cliffhangers, as well as how to eye tracking and image composition. You will become familiar with the variety of drawing and painting styles and forms of expression. You will create camera movements with the pencil in your own rhythm and style. You decide more confidently which typeface, which lettering fits the content and and form of your graphic novel and how your cover can arouse curiosity and and sets the mood for the content.

Whether alone or in tandem with a draughtsman and a copywriter—don’t do it like Pablo Picasso, who regretted only one thing at the end of his life: not having drawn comics.

All Days for Future

Sustainability starts in everyday life: with the behavior of each individual and the products they choose—all day, around the clock. Getting up: What time? Brushing teeth: Which toothbrush? Dressing: Which pants and sneaker? Drinking coffee: Which cup? And so it continues on the way to the office, to sports, all the way back home: What do I cook with? Which couch? How can I charge my smartphone (which one?) in a more resource-friendly way? And finally, off to … which bed?

The book—a cradle-to-cradle-product as well—provides answers to around 100 of these everyday questions from the perspective of innovative and young designers. It shows how, in everyday life, choosing ecological and fairly produced products is not only a simple decision for the future, but also a way to improve the quality of life.

Dead & Alive—Birthday Calendar—Vol. 03 Football

Here it is, the everlasting typographic birthday calendar DEAD & ALIVE Vol. 03—Football.

Discover the top players with whom you share a birthday! On the front, thanks to the bright green tones—each month has been given a different shade of green—it’s easy to write down the birthdays of friends and family! And on the back of the monthly pages, there’s a mini bio on each player.

It’s a tribute to 366 personalities from the world of football—yes—male, female, and diverse players! And sometimes the decision was not easy when two people had the same birthday: Sorry, Mr. Beckham, you were not nominated. Sylvia Neid won against you. Not surprising, since she was involved in all the European Championship titles of her national team as a player, co-coach, or national coach. And only she has been awarded FIFA Coach of the Year more than once (2010, 2013, and 2016) as a coach. When browsing, one can see the great influence of generations of top players on this sporting discipline.

Grafikmagazin 06.22 – Logo Design

As the name indicates, Grafikmagazin is a print magazine focusing on all things graphic design. Primarily it’s aimed at professional creatives and design students from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and beyond. Grafikmagazin presents outstanding work from graphic design, typography, illustration, photography, design theory, research, paper, and printing every two months.

The editorial team of Grafikmagazin created a variety of sections and categories but selected focus themes for each issue, like Logo Design. The topics portray how imaginative, eclectic, and playful graphic design can be while featuring successful branding concepts and niche ideas.
The extensive Showroom section lets readers know other creatives and the stories behind design studios worldwide. In this issue, Grafikmagazin 05.22 – Logo Design, the iconic illustrator Sempé was featured, amongst others.

The Design & Research category presents interdisciplinary projects that show how science and research can benefit from creative solutions and play an active role in graphic design.

In the Production & Publishing section, everything revolves around print. You will find exquisite books, sophisticated annual reports, and high-quality embossed greeting cards. Also, the cover artists of each issue are interviewed or get to highlight their ideas.

Each cover is printed on a different paper, and the design interprets the particular Grafik+ theme more broadly or shares a fresh perspective on a unique design technique.

The Grafikmagazin team, its correspondents, and freelancers are bound and driven by the firm belief that print is not dead. With the will to prove just how alive it is, and the motivation to start something fresh yet deeply traditional, they strive for nothing less than to create another print magazine that makes history.

Sorry, War Noch Kurz Laufen

Sorry, War Noch Kurz Laufen is for all the runners, those who want to run or those who have failed running.

Not long ago people thought running could cause the uterus to drop out. Running against the patriarchy, runners such as Roberta Louise Gibb and Kathrine Switzer fought their way towards the right to join a marathon. In doing so, they paved the way for diverse runners across the globe. Because running knows no gender.

In this book there are no diet tips, nor are there any tutorials for sweat-proof make up. It discusses the really important questions: why is running so exhausting at the beginning? What is the right pace to keep up? And how does the menstruation cycle influence performance?

Reports of personal experiences, simple basics, and expert interviews deliver knowledge beyond performance pressure and competitive thoughts.

cie. toula limnaios

More than 25 years ago, the choreographer Toula Limnaios and the composer Ralf R. Ollertz founded the dance company cie. toula limnaios. As one of the few groups with its own venue and permanent ensemble, the Berlin-based company tours Europe, Africa, and South America with its celebrated repertoire.

In their dance pieces, Limnaios and Ollertz display all facets of life. Their scenes and images are enigmatic, poetic, and sometimes disturbing, but always have an enduring resonance. They offer insight and are immersive, while also providing absurd humor and a mischievous seriousness.

How can the experience of dance, the fleeting moments of understanding or intimations thereof, be captured? The book approaches the company’s dance art from diverse perspectives. Dancers, former and current companions, choreographers, event organizers, critics, and, last but not least, the audience themselves have their say. Photographs and sketches of scenes from the work diary of Toula Limnaios allow us to peek into the vastness of her ideas. This is a book to read, leaf through and explore—and it is about the genesis of a community.

DDC Publikation “266 weltverbessernde Projekte – ein Prozess”

How the DDC created WAS IST GUT, a design competition for world-improving projects, and what it produced, is documented in 266 weltverbessernde Projekte – ein Prozess, edited by Bettina Knoth.
This competition was different. And so is this publication! With WAS IST GUT, the DDC did not look for the familiar glossy solutions, but asked for projects that people have always wanted to do, because they open up new perspectives and spaces of possibility. The winners were selected through a democratic process of facilitated workshops and a symposium.
The 218 pages center around these following questions: How do we design meaningful things? How do we design sustainable living environments? How do we enable social relationships? All 60 nominated and awarded submissions in the categories product, space, and communication are shown in texts and images. In addition to inspiring essays and contributions by Prof. Mikala Holme Samsøe, Bettina Knoth, Prof. Dr. Felix Kosok, Nicolas Markwald, Rolf Mehnert, Ana Relvão, Michael Schieben, and Nina Sieverding, the entire process of the WAS IST GUT competition, from its genesis to the symposium and award ceremony, is documented in numerous illustrations, reflections, and commentaries. The publication was designed by oppa franz in close collaboration with DDC board spokeswoman Bettina Knoth. The great portraits are by Robertino Nicolic.

nomad 13—optimism

This issue focuses on the silver linings on the horizon of the paradigm shift—as the publishers seek to identify its indicators, trace its background, and anticipate its implications: nomad 13. They ask themselves where these changes will take them, and talk to those who are addressing future issues on a daily basis and envisioning solutions for the long run: architects, designers, artists, scientists. Amongst them: Bjarke Ingels with ‘Plan for the Planet,’ Anab Jain and Jon Ardern from London design studio Superflux, architect and mayor Përparim Rama, Amy Franceschini on modesty and wisdom as part of the solution, Courtenay Smith on ‘houses that can save the world,’ and many more interviews and thoughts that spark optimism and illuminate people’s view into the future.

Some Magazine #15—Together

What unites us? Since humans first formed communities, they have been thinking about what can be achieved better, faster, and easier together instead of alone. So the idea of collaboration is nothing new, we are herd creatures. In art, design, and culture, the collaborative is also a tried and tested approach. Last but not least, shared suffering is also half suffering. However, it is not only work and profit that are being shared, authorship is also transferred from the individual to the community.

The editorial team of Some Magazine #15—Together talked to very different artists and designers about their strategies and attitudes towards sharing. They found surprising new paths and unusual perspectives. But above all, the research for this issue left the editorial team with the deep conviction that the big questions, problems, and crises of our time can certainly only be overcome together—not alone. In this issue: Albrecht / Wilke, Na Kim, Studio Pandan, Josh Kern, Solitype, Maxim Brandt, Zongbo Jiang, and Clara Vastano.

Some Magazine is a bi-annual art and design publication from the Experimental Design course of Prof. Sven Völker at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam. Since 2010, changing editorial teams of young art and design students research, write, layout, and produce it.

A Magazine for Visual Inventors!

Slanted Magazine #40—Experimental Type

This issue is out of stock, but check the reprint with additional content here!

Mum probably told us, “The oven is a danger zone.” Still, we had to experiment our first burn to know how hot fire is. Our parents covered us with millions of kisses, long before we fell in love with somebody and experimented our first kiss. Even if we saw it before, nobody could really tell us how beautiful it is. Everyone must experience it by him- or herself. In other words: by making experiments we gain experience and knowledge. Experiments open our horizon, let us enter the undiscovered, and feed our lust for more.

With Slanted Magazine #40—Experimental Type we open eight doors, each one offering a glimpse into spaces that were explored by pushing conventions, limitations, and thoughts to the next level. We all know though, that the game is never over. The discovery of new areas, technologies, and thoughts are a constant source of inspiration, research, and experimentation for those that follow.

Tactile Realism shows works with tactile character, adding material properties to the typeface. The Anti-Reader-Friendly typography becomes the “readymade” of the type world—and in doing so, a form of denying the possibility of defining art. In the Deliberate Imperfection & Serendipity space, disassembly, and assembly of type leads to great discoveries. While Coincidence & Intention brings the accident into the design process and explores works based on mistakes and inaccuracy. The Ever-Changing room showcases experiments of kinetic typography breaking away from its static state by adding movement and a three-dimensional stereoscopy, and the fourth dimension: time. Cutting Edge drives the attention to state-of-the-art technologies and their impact on design experiments. Off the Screen explores physical space in which writing becomes material, object, and sculpture. Last but not least, Push to the Limits engages to think finitude differently, breaking boundaries of learned symbolisms and triggering new stimuli.

In addition, a special limited edition has been published. A set of three type stencil to draw your own experimental letters. Keep on being experimental!

A One Storied Country

In 1957, an explosion occurred at the Mayak nuclear facility near the town of Kyshtym in the Russian Urals. Although scattered reports of a nuclear accident in Russia appeared in the Western press as early as the following year, the Soviet government refused to acknowledge the event. Later reports would show that two-fifths as much radioactivity was released at Kyshtym as was later released at Chernobyl, with the plume travelling northeast.

Despite efforts to conceal the accident, increased activity around the plant and nearby hospitals filling up with sufferers of radiation sickness led to talk and suspicion amongst the local people. Eventually, thousands were evacuated from their homes, entire villages were demolished, and peasants living nearby were ordered—without explanation—to slaughter their livestock, bury their crops, and plow their farmlands.

The Techa, a prominent river that runs east of the Urals, was already noted for its nuclear contamination despite the dozens of riverside villages who relied on the river as their sole source of drinking, washing, and bathing water. Of the many villages that lined its banks, 23 of them were eventually evacuated due to radiation after 1957.

Chris Bierl followed the river upwards, which led him to many more poisoned and exploited places. Much of Russia’s heavy industry was moved to this area to avoid it falling into the hands of the Nazis as they invaded the USSR. In his photographs, Chris Bierl shows the effects of this anthropological invasion of natural landscapes. This series presents impressions from the above-mentioned “landmarks,” as locals call them, and is part of the artist’s interest in post-Soviet spaces—hereby Russia’s search for identity between feelings of deprivation and paralysis.

Utopia Ending

Utopia Ending by Gianluca Calise investigates the urban transformation of London since the 2012 Olympics, and includes photographs taken between 2014 to 2019.

Through images and text, including three interviews and a final essay, the author compares the current finance-driven development of the city with the post-WWII expansion based on council houses: investments in social housing have been almost entirely eradicated and the new buildings are more financial assets for global investors, rather than homes for Londoners.

Forward Magazine “Construct Deconstruct”—COLLECTORS EDITION

Issue No. 1 of the Forward Magazine 2018.
The visual identity of Forward Festival 2018 reflects the festival topic “Construct-Deconstruct.” The interplay of Wiener Werkstätte inspired elements and contemporary graphic design indicates the two-sided story of every final product or concept. Pablo Picasso once said “every act of creation is first an act of destruction.” The great Spanish artist points out that destruction isn’t a system failure but necessary to create something new. In line with ol’ Pablo the designers want to deconstruct outdated structures so that a new way of thinking can take place. In the process they celebrate the creativity of these acts because smashing things is always fun, isn’t it?
Including interviews with Erik Spiekermann, Stefan Sagmeister, Erik Kessels, and much more!

The World’s Best Typography—The 43. Annual of the Type Directors Club 2022

The yearbook of the Type Directors Club in New York is a bible of inspiration for typo aficionados. This is where craftsmanship meets creation, classic skills meet new things. This is where trends are identified and set.

Designers from all over the world compete to be part of the book. The competition is divided into communication design and type design. In both categories, also students have the opportunity to compete against each other in their own section. The Award for Typographic Excellence is their ticket to the best agencies in the world.

The yearbook itself is evidence of the latest typography trends, sets standards, is a collector’s item, and distinguishes its owners as visual pioneers.

Forward Magazine—”Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit”

Forward Magazine No 5 — Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit. is now available in Slanted Shop.
On 108 pages, including 8 interviews with a variety of Austrian creatives like Stefan Sagmeister, Frau Isa and Mafia Mashi, the magazine takes a deep dive into Austrian design and what it stands for.
Forward also introduces its newly founded Forward Network, which follows the collaborative spirit of the Wiener Werkstätte and features lots of creatives from different fields and styles.
The amazing print design by Zwupp is emphasized by an extraordinary feel due to the four different kinds of eco-friendly paper and a cover with a special effect. The swallow on the cover is thermosensitive: At first glance it appears to be all black – but once you put it in the sun or warm it up with your hand, the famous title-giving claim of Wiener Werkstätte appears behind the black finish.

Kritzel

Doodled is almost everything, always and everywhere. Even horses! Who knows what a great line is? A straight, clean one or a crooked, smeared one? In the picture book DOODLE, Doodle himself is talking. And we listen, look closely, and ask ourselves questions like, “When is a line an arm?” In this book, the arm is the beginning of a story. DOODLE shows kids that you can do quite a lot with just a few quick strokes. And that you should never underestimate Doodle.

Mascots

All 15 world cup mascots World Cup Willie to La’eeb in one booklet. Only the ball is missing. Watercolor paintings by Winnes Rademächers.

RING RING

A look back and forward. RING RING is a series of painted smartphones by Winnes Rademächers. Point by point, much more is shown here than the minimalist drawings initially suggest.

I’ve known rivers

A one song book. The song lyrics are flooded with graphics. The title and the quoted text in the booklet are by Gary Bartz. I’ve known rivers is the title track of his live album recorded in 1973.

Heb mal ein Bein!

The picture book HEB MAL EIN BEIN! asks many questions: Who speaks in a book? When do pictures come to life? What is a story? What is a book anyway? What does the author have to do with it? The answers don’t seem easy, but in this story they end up being just that.
HEB MAL EIN BEIN! was awarded by the Stiftung Buchkunst as one of the 25 most beautiful German books of 2023.

Doodle

Doodled is almost everything, always and everywhere. Even horses! Who knows what a great line is? A straight, clean one or a crooked, smeared one? In the picture book DOODLE, Doodle himself is talking. And we listen, look closely, and ask ourselves questions like, “When is a line an arm?” In this book, the arm is the beginning of a story.
